What is Wrestling?

Wrestling is one of the oldest and most respected sports in the world. It’s a one-on-one combat sport where athletes compete to gain control over their opponent using techniques like takedowns, escapes, and pins—all while following strict rules to ensure safety and sportsmanship.

At the youth level, wrestling helps build strength, coordination, balance, discipline, and confidence. It’s a great way for kids to stay active, learn how to overcome challenges, and develop a strong work ethic both on and off the mat.

Wrestling is also a team sport in many ways—kids train together, support each other, and compete for their club or school. It’s welcoming to all body types, skill levels, and personalities, and there’s always a spot for anyone willing to work hard and learn.

Why join our club?

Our club, Iguana Athletics Wrestling Club, offers a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment where kids can learn the fundamentals of wrestling in a safe and fun way. No prior experience from kids or parents is needed—we guide everyone step by step.

We have an introductory youth group, which focuses on basic technique, movement, coordination, body awareness, and of course, having fun. Practices usually include drills, games, and very light, age-appropriate contact.

If your child ends up really enjoying the sport and wants to take it a step further, we offer a competitive group for kids who are eager to train a bit more and experience the sport at a higher level. We also provide opportunities to compete in tournaments throughout the season. Competing is completely optional for first-year wrestlers, but we highly recommend trying at least one—they’re a lot of fun for the kids and help build confidence and excitement. Season usually goes from late November to mid-February.

At Iguana Athletics Wrestling Club, we use wrestling to help kids grow not just as athletes, but as people. From ages 5 to 18 for boys and girls, we guide youth through a structured, safe, and supportive environment where they learn:

  • Respect for themselves and others
  • Mental and physical toughness
  • Confidence and resilience
  • Accountability and goal-setting
